| Lot description: Elagabalus and Julia Soaemias. ; Elagabalus and Julia Soaemias; 218-222 AD, Marcianopolis, Moesia Inferior, Governor Julius Antonius Seleucus, AE 26-27, 5 Assaria, 10.27g. AMNG-980 (1 spec.), Varbanov-1606, Pfeiffer-504 (same dies). Obv: Names and busts of Elagabablus and his mother, her name spelled IOV?IA COVAI[MIC]. Rx: Name of governor and mint in Greek, Hermes standing l. holding purse and caduceus, at his feet a rooster, value mark E in r. field. Double-portrait coins of Elagabalus and Soaemias occur only at Marcianopolis, not at Rome or at any other provincial mint. Until recently, such coins were great rarities: AMNG p. 280 could find only four specimens, with three different reverse types, in all of the public and private collections of Europe during the 1890s.
