Elagabalus and Julia Soaemias. ; Elagabalus and Julia Soaemias; 218-222 AD, Marcianopolis, Moesia Inferior, Governor Julius Antonius Seleucus, AE 26-27, 5 Assaria, 10.27g. AMNG-980 (1 spec.), Varbanov-1606, Pfeiffer-504 (same dies). Obv: Names and busts of Elagabablus and his mother, her name spelled IOV?IA COVAI[MIC]. Rx: Name of governor and mint in Greek, Hermes standing l. holding purse and caduceus, at his feet a rooster, value mark E in r. field. Double-portrait coins of Elagabalus and Soaemias occur only at Marcianopolis, not at Rome or at any other provincial mint. Until recently, such coins were great rarities: AMNG p. 280 could find only four specimens, with three different reverse types, in all of the public and private collections of Europe during the 1890s. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, more specimens have been emerging from the Balkans. Still a rare coin, with an important obverse type.. F
